On February 11, 2012 the world lost a beloved musical icon. Whitney Houston was undisputedly one of the greatest singers of our time. A true to form Grammy-winning diva who set the bar and inspired hundreds of singers to follow in her footsteps. When asked who they aspire to be like, most singers will proclaim Whitney Houston. And why wouldn’t they? Her chest voice was powerful beyond compare. She was pitch perfect.
In her prime, she created some of the best pop songs of this era. Timeless music that spans generations and will never be forgotten. With 11 No.1 singles under her belt, she was the epitome of musical excellence. Her voice was a rare gift that captivated audiences around the world. Even now, her “Greatest Hits” album has re-entered the Billboard charts at No.2 selling 175,000 copies, its best sales week since its debut in 2000. Arguably her most successful single, “I Will Always Love You” was resurrected and shot to No.2 on the Hot 100 alongside many other Whitney singles that re-entered the chart after her untimely death.
She had just finished filming for the new movie “Sparkle” which will be released later this year. In a sad twist of fate, the last songs Whitney Houston recorded will be heard in the film, one on camera and the other during the closing credits. She may have had her faults, but there is no denying her colossal talent. She will always be remembered for her amazing musical contributions and her incredible voice will echo on for all time. RIP Whitney Houston (1963 – 2012)
